Exigence

Exigence is the event that prompts us to react. In the case of our very class, our reaction is written. Throughout all of our assignments, we have written responses to issues that we personally connect with, especially in the blended genres assignment, where we write about an experience in our lives and use that to expose the underlying issue in our narrative. In the case of how I approached this in the blended assignment, I stated in my essay

“This experience brought up the question ‘Why do people often show resentment to those on the autistic spectrum?'”
“An autistic person sees the world differently from the average person so they react differently and that could very much mean borderline oppression towards that individual, which can take many forms, including bullying.”

The experience I am referring to is the time when I was in middle school and I witness my sister get bullied by kids who happened to be in the same special needs class as she was. Thinking back on this experience prompted me to think of a question, research and gather data, and then write the response to the question I posed to myself. The key to exigence is to ask yourself “So what? Why does this matter?” and you form more questions around that. Once you do that, your reaction will come to you. In this case, it will come to you if you do research, find data, and even find firsthand accounts on the issue. Once you do that, the answer will come to you and you’ll have a more informed approach to your assignment.
