Stance

Stance is the opinions that we form on a topic. Over the semester, we’ve written argumentative essays that allow us to take a stance on a topic of our choice. In my assignments, my stance is usually advocating for certain issues, such as more inclusive education in public school systems. I did this in my multimodal assignment and I stated,

American students do not receive a balanced curriculum on Asian American history and are unable to understand the hardships Asians have received; therefore, the department of education should implement a non-bias curriculum to ensure American students do not continue stereotypes, bias, and discrimination against Asian Americans and have a perspective on Asian Americans that portrays all viewpoints. These viewpoints should include hardships as well the positive things they have done for our nation.

I am taking a stance against the current practices of the public school curriculum we know today. The Board of Education currently has a huge lean towards European American history, and all other subjects regarding minorities in America are all talked about for two lessons if talked about at all. Asian American history in particular is only taught in the form of the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the containment of Japanese Americans in concentration camps. The only things that are taught on the subject of Asian American history all paint a negative light as well. A balanced education would be an education that pays equal attention to all aspects of history, good and bad. Both sides are represented and no one leaves with an incomplete view of one particular group of people.
